Welcome to Government Arts & Sports College
Some 62 years ago, the then Chief Minister S. Partap Singh Kairon, with an aim to give not only Punjab but the nation a prominent place in the field of sports, laid the foundation of the State College of Sports in 1961. It was the first sports college in Asia and made Punjab renowned worldwide in the field of sports.
The eminent Olympian Mr. Som Nath was the founding principal of the college. Later, many great personalities led the college to the height of success in sports. The arts subjects were introduced in the college in 1977 and therefore the college was renamed as “Government Arts and Sports College”.Later converted to a co-educational institution in 2005-2006.
The alumni of the college comprise of well-known hockey players like Surjit Singh and Harcharan Singh (Flying Eagle), champion athletes like Ishar Singh Deol and Jagdeep Singh among many others.
The Govt. Arts and Sports College, Jalandhar which was earlier affiliated of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar is now a constituent college of The Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University at Patiala.
This state run university aims to bring forth the sporting talent of Punjab to International levels and promote a scientific sports culture along with the best educational skills among the youth.
The lush green 43 acres’ campus is well equipped with infrastructure and playgrounds as per International standards. Major courses run in the college are B.A., B.P.E.S and PG Diploma in Yoga. The college is committed to create a bright and vibrant future for its students and also aims to impart value education to the youth keeping them away from the menace of drug use and abuse.
