CULTURAL & CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES


To impart holistic education to our students, discover and develop their talents, and provide a healthy learning environment in the college, there are different societies and councils which function all the year round. With the stimulating & upfront leadership of our Principal Mrs. Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary, the cultural & co-curricular environment of the institution has enriched and gained impetus.

Our institutions energetically and continuously respond to the most compelling issues of our community, society and the world. Concerns which relate to the youth like the problem of AIDS, drugs and environment etc. are addressed by the college. Under the stewardship of college Medical officer Dr. Sunita, a Red Ribbon Club has been formed in the college to generate awareness among masses about HIV. A lecture on AIDS and STDs was held in the college to promote better understanding of HIV. Dr. Ashwani Gupta and Dr. Breena from Civil Hospital from Jalandhar addressed the students.. A rally on AIDS awareness led by the college Principal and all the staff members paraded the roads of jalandhar city. The Red Ribbon Club also held a poster making competition on the campus. A Red Ribbon bus from Pushpa Gujral Science City visited our college on invitation and Dr. Raghubir Singh member of National AIDS control society gave a very informative lecture to the students. A Blood Donation Camp was held in the college with the help of Civil Hospital and Rotary Club, Jalandhar Central. Dr. Charanjiv and others staff from Civil Hospital helped enthusiastic students of our college to donate their blood for the ailing and needy people. Dr. Sarita Suri, MD (gyneacologist) from Civil Hospital Jalandhar delivered extension lecture on “Female Health Problems”.

The institution celebrates and honours all important national days and events. National Flag Day was celebrated with great patriotic fervor on the college campus.

The Rotary Club of Jalandhar and the State Bank of India have helped our college in tree plantation. ‘Vanmahotsav’ was celebrated in the college with great fervor. State Bank of India donated saplings under the community Service Banking. A seminar was held before plantation in which Mr. Avani Kumar, AGM, State Bank of India, shared his views. Prof. J.S. Kahlon facilitated this project.

A Rotaract Club was formed in the college with the efforts & initiative of Dr. Paramjit Kaur Sandhu. Members of Rotract club participated in the Pulse Polio rally in 7th Feb 2008. The club also organized the paper reading contest on Female Foeticide.English Literary society and Functional English society constantly endeavour to promote students’ interest in English literature, communication skills, elocution, public speaking and develop their reading and creative writing skills.The English societies held a Word Master, speaking competition, Extempore speech and Calligraphy competitions. The students of Functional English adapted & enacted a play “Toba Tek Singh” on the stage. The Fuctional English Society started a wall journal “ ACTA DIURNA “ to promote the creative and journalistic talents of the students. Suryskant Tripathi Nirala manch of Hindi Deptt. Organised in Essay competition. Galaxy Association of Geography Deptt. Held a poster and model making competition.

Mrs. Atima Sharma, Head, Deptt. Of English participated in seminars at New York University and Columbia University in Sept, 2007. She also attended a creative Workshop at Princeton University. She addressed a British Council sponsored seminar for working women “ Spring Board “ in St. Bede’s college, Shimla. Recently, Dr. Atima Sharma has joined as Principal, Kanya Maha Vidhyalaya, a prestigious institution of the city. Mr. Surinder Singh, Dept of Political Science has been promoted as Principal of Govt. college of Physical Education, Patiala.

Deptt. Of History prepared outstanding projects and Mrs. Balwinder participated in the seminar on Namdhari movement in S.R. Govt. College for Women, Amritsar. Prof. Kulbir Singh, Head Deptt. Of Punjabi, participated in the International Conference “Broadcast Asia – 2007” in Singapore. Mrs. Paramjit kaur, lecturer in Public Administration, completed her Ph.D. on municipal corporations in Punjab.

IT Department is on very strong footing. Short Term Courses are being offered to the students during summer vacations. Computer Hardware, Internet, Computer Basis and MS Office, Adobe Photoshop courses are being offered in addition to the regular degree courses being run on. This achievement sir, has been done due to your help, guidance and encouragement. The Self-Financing courses started in the college are all due to your visionary and dynamic leadership sir.

To impart exposure, leisure and knowledge to the students, the college regularly organizes students trips to various places of interest. Students went to the historical city of Jodhpur and Jaisalmer under the guidance of Prof. Surinder Singh and Prof. Harpreet Singh. Keeping in view the limited resources of the students, Principal Karamjit Kaur Choudhary organized free boarding and lodging for them. Another trip went to Naina Devi and Anandpur Sahib. Students of Functional English visited the Newspaper Publication houses and other places of interest like Airlines Booking office to develop their vocational skills.

Our college students regularly participate in Inter-College competitions in various institutions and win laurels. Our college quiz team under the guidance of Sh. Surinder Singh has been regularly participating in the Quiz competition held in ‘Mela Ghadri Babian Da’ organized by Desh Bhagat Yadgar Committee.

The college students participate in the GNDU Youth Festival with great enthusiasm and win prizes every year. In 2007-08 the prizes in different events in Zonal Youth Festival were as these:-

Sunil & Isha participated in Inter- Zonal Youth Festival. Isha stood 3rd in Fancy Dress in Inter-Zonal Youth Festival.

We are making constant efforts to develop our college to make it the premier seat of education, where academic and sporting tradition go hand on hand. Govt. Arts & Sports College is the only Govt Institution of Higher Education in this city. The institution will continue to strive to provide quality education accessible to students from all sections of society and change their lives to make them the nation builders of a globally strong India.
